St Nicholas
at the Heraion

There are three churches in the vicinity of the Heraion: those of St Nicholas, of St John in the archaeological site, and of the Transfiguration of Our Lord near Vouliagmeni lake.

The church of St Nicholas was built some 200 years ago on a natural acropolis to the east of the harbor which once sewed the Heraion. It is a single-aisled basilica with a vaulted roof whose middle sanctuary apse is within a huge rock. There is a feature of interest on the west side of the exterior: a window that also serves as a gun-slit and bears an elaborate ornament that originated in some Early Christian church.
